The recreation softball program services girls ages 4-15. The age groups are separated by T-Ball, 8 & Under (8U), 10 & Under (10U), 12 & Under (12U), and 15 & Under (15U). The age of your daughter prior to January 1st is the age group in which she will play. An assessment process is in place for anyone wanting to play in a higher age group prior to being age-eligible for that level.
As with all GCAA sports, you do not have to be a resident of Johnston County or the immediate Cleveland area to participate.
Fast pitch softball is only available to females.
We try to avoid Wednesday night practices and games whenever possible, so as not to interfere with area church youth groups and church services. However, there are occasional games/practices on Wednesdays.
Before the season starts, each team will have a certain night during the week and a time slot on the weekend they can practice. Once the season starts, teams only practice during their weekend time slot.
In the Spring, sign-ups begin around January 1 and practice starts in March. The Spring season usually starts at the end of March or first of April. Depending on the number of teams, some age groups may start and end their season later. Most age groups are done by the end of May (15U sometimes plays into June). Fall sign-ups begin in June or July and practice starts in August. The Fall season usually begins in September and ends by the end of October. We try to play all games during the week. However, depending on field availability and the number of teams, there is a possibility of weekend games. Typically, we average 2 games per week. There may be some weeks with only 1 and some with 3. The season is comprised of 8-12 games, with 8 games considered a full season.
T-Ball: 1 hour time limit. T-Ball games usually begin at 6:00 and/or 7:00. 8U, 10U, & 12U: 6 innings or 1 hour and 15 minute time limit (finish the inning). 8U games usually begin at 6:00 and 7:30. 15U: 6 innings or 1 hour and 30 minute time limit, whichever comes first (a new inning may not begin after 1 hour and 20 minutes). 15U home games usually begin at 6:00 and/or 7:30. Away games are usually at 6:30 and/or 8:00.
Most home games are played at the GCAA Complex, with the possibility of some being played at West View Elementary. Currently, our T-ball, 8U, and 10U age groups have enough participation that we are able to maintain our own league and keep all of our games in Cleveland. When we have less than 4 teams in any age group, we play other communities throughout the area as a member of the JCAA (Johnston County Athletic Association). Some of the areas that we may visit are Clayton, Corinth Holder, Meadow, McGee’s Crossroads, Benson, Four Oaks, Kenly, Glendale, and Princeton.
The GCAA Fast Pitch Softball program is currently governed by the Tar Heel Leagues, Inc. All-Star teams play under Tar Heel Rules, while league games are played under the Tar Heel Rules as modified by the JCAA and GCAA. Rules of play for each age division may be found by clicking the links below.
All Star tryouts will begin shortly after the Spring season ends. Any girl that participated in the league can try out for All Stars. All age groups except for T-Ball may participate in the All Stars.
While the regular season is about player development and fun, the All-Star teams are focused on fielding the best possible team to win games in a tournament format. All-Star teams are selected by the coaches based on each player's body of work throughout the season, as well as their performance during the tryout. A player may have a poor tryout and still make the team based on their performance during the regular season. Conversely, a player may have a fantastic tryout and not make the team. While we would love to give all of the girls the opportunity to be on an all-star team, there are only a limited number of roster spots available.
Today is the day I leave it all on the field.
Today, I will pour every ounce of effort I have into Cleveland Softball.
Today is the day I will show everyone what I stand for. Respect, love, and delight are what I am made of.
I will respect my coach, my teammates, my opponents, the umpires, my parents, and most of all MYSELF.
My love for the game will be evident by my dirt-stained jersey, the never-ending streams of sweat rolling down my cheeks, and my willingness to jump back up when it's so much easier to stay down.
The pure joy of being between those lines is shown by the smile on my face and the flutter of excitement in my soul.
At the end of the day, win or lose, I WILL be a better person. I WILL be humble in victory and proud in defeat because no matter the outcome I did my best.
Yes, today is the day I celebrate my team, my family, and this wonderful game we call SOFTBALL.
Today, like yesterday, and like tomorrow, I will represent Cleveland Softball to the best of my ability ON and OFF the field.
